Waffle irons have been around for several hundred years in different forms.   The first American to patent a waffle iron was Cornelius Swarthout in 1869.   His design was made of cast iron and was placed over a heat source.    In 1911, General Electric made the first electric waffle iron.   There have been many sizes, shapes and designs of the waffle iron over the years.
